Funeral services for Ralph Walton, 80, of Clearfield, SD were held on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Kotrba Funeral Home in Gregory with Pastor Kevin Nelson officiating.

Music was provided by the Abundand Rock Church praise band along with congregational hymns and a recorded selection.

Ralph Dean Walton was born November 18, 1930, at the Tripp County home of his grandmother. He was the fourth child of eight children born to Ralph Andrew Walton and Freda (nee Wagner) Walton. He grew up in the Clearfield area and attended school there.

As a young man he entered military service and was stationed near Washington, DC. During these years he met Norma Jean Martin. They were married on September 5, 1953 at the Church of the Brethren in Morrellville, PA. After military service they have made their home in Tripp County, SD. Here they raised their family of three children. Ralph was proud of his home and family - commenting that Norma should have operated a restaurant.

Ralph was a farmer and rancher at heart, being innovative at adapting to all the challenges facing a rancher on the prairies of Tripp County, SD. He enjoyed working with and training his horses for the work on the ranch along with his dogs.

Ralph enjoyed singing the old songs to his great- grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Wright Township Board in Tripp County.

Ralph accepted the Lord in November 1974 and was delivered from smoking.

With failing health he was admitted to the Lake Andes Healthcare Center where he died on November 1, 2011, just 17 days before his 81st birthday.

He is survived by his wife Norma and their three children: Janice Hanson of Winner, SD -Jeffrey Walton and his wife Carol of Harlan, Iowa - and Christie and her husband Eugene Para of Fremont, CA; and by four grandchildren: Matthew Hanson his wife Audrey and their children Naomi and JJ of Gregory, SD- Sarah and her husband Paul Dennis and their son Philip of Kansas City, MO- Jessica Jefferson and her husband Jamel Ankeny, IA - and Timothy Walton of Newton, IA. He is also survived by three sisters: LaVern Bechtol of Coulee City, WA; Elinor Bloomstrom of Winner, SD; and Kay Foster of Nice, CA; and by two brothers: Albert Walton of Grand Island, NE and Richard Walton of Clearfield, SD.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law; and two sisters.
