Born on May 26, 1930, Joyce Marie Holden Steffen, was the first of five daughters born to Martin and Olive (Keogh) Holden. She was born at her Grandma and Grandpa Holden's house and grew up south of Colome. She attended country school at the Turtle Butte school through the 8th grade and then attended Colome High School for a couple of years.

On August 4, 1947, Joyce Marie Holden Steffen married a neighbor boy, Leonard Alden Steffen, Sr. To this union two children were born, Jolene Hagen and Lennie Steffen. Joyce worked for many years at the Colome Café serving the local community. She also worked at the Colome Locker, Sam's Café in Winner, and did housekeeping at the Winner Hospital. When she retired, she was a housewife as she loved baking and cooking for her family. Joyce loved having visitors. She enjoyed bantering with others and always made her visitors comfortable through laughter. Joyce rarely had a loss for words and was quick witted and fun to be around.

She was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and also of the St. Isidore's Catholic Church. Joyce was a committed member of the Catholic Church with a strong, faithful conviction of praying the rosary daily for those she loved. She served as President of the Catholic Daughters for many years and taught catechism in her younger days.

Joyce is survived by her two children: Jolene (Matt) Hagen of Winner, SD and Lennie (Debbie) Steffen of Colome, SD; five grandchildren: Marty (Michelle) Hagen, Amy (Joe) Paulson, Lenna (Vince) Thieman, Shane (Beth) Steffen, and Desirae (Matt) Vobr; 22 great grandchildren; two sisters: Luella Marsh and Sharon Dawson; two sisters-in-laws: Betty Kirwan and Doris Zimbelman; one brother-in-law: Jack Fritz Steffen.
