Robert Edward Sperl, Sr.

Bob was born on June 6, 1933 to Ed and Ethel (Krizan) Sperl on the family farm northeast of Gregory.

His early years of school were at Woidneck Country School and later attended Gregory High School where he participated in football and track. He had polio in his high school years which set him back a year so he was in the same class as his sister Connie. After meeting his high school sweetheart and future wife, he and Connie transferred to Burke where he graduated from Burke High School in 1952. He enjoyed attending class reunions with both Burke and Gregory classes.

Bob married Lyla (LaFave) on August 22, 1952 and they made their home on a farm northeast of Gregory where they raised their four children, Robert, Jr., Sue, Rod and Peg.

His wife of 49 years passed away on November 15, 2001. Bob continued to live at their home for several years until health issues required his move into Gregory. He lived in an apartment for several years and then moved to Silver Threads for a few months until moving to Avera Rosebud Country Care Center until his death.

He was a farmer and a rancher his entire life. He raised and sold Charolais bulls for several years. Due to declining heath he sold all the cattle but continued to be involved in the farming of his land but had it custom done. He enjoyed being the decision maker with his land even though he couldn't be the farmer any longer.

Bob served for many years on the Gregory School Board, Rosebud Farmers Union Board, and Gregory County Conservation Board. He was elected Gregory County Commissioner and served in that capacity for several years. Bob was a staunch Democrat and was always ready to discuss taxes and politics.

Bob passed away on October 12, 2017 at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center at the age of 84 years.

He is survived by his children: Robert, Jr. (Penny) Sperl, Sue Sperl Ames, and Peg (Doug) Roggow; daughter-in-law Cheryl Sperl; eight grandchildren: Bobbi Jo Gilkerson, Jon (Sarah) Sperl, Lilly Ames, Kati (Jon) Champlin, Daren (Katie) Roggow, Ben (Erica) Sperl, and Sam Sperl (Caleb DuFrane); twelve great-grandchildren: Ella, Sawyer, Sully Sperl, Morrie Gilkerson, Raegan and Rylie Sperl, Addyson and Anders DuFrane, Liam and Evangeline Champlin and Avery and Dawson Roggow; sisters-in-law Norma Inglett and Verlyn (Jim) Brents; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Ethel Sperl, in-laws Albert (Bus) LaFave and Emma Luke; wife Lyla Sperl; son Rod Sperl; grandson Ryan Ames; brother Joe Sperl; sister Connie (Eugene) McCammon; sister-in-law Sharon (Pete) Jodozi; brothers-in-law Frenchy (Betty) LaFave and Wendell Luke.
