Richard D. (Dick) Steffen, 79, Gregory, died April 27, 2016, at Avera Gregory Hospital.
Dick was born July 26, 1936, to Ernest and Viola (Drees) Steffen of Gregory, South Dakota. He was raised in Gregory County and attended high school at Gregory High. During Dick's youth he participated in sports, hunted, fished and generally enjoyed all outdoor activities. Dick married Carolyn J. "Jean" Lebert on March 17, 1956. Dick and Jean raised six children: Tam, Doug, Brenda, Mike, Todd, and Linda.
Dick worked on a dairy farm near Renner, South Dakota; worked as a farm and ranch hand in and around Dallas and Gregory; managed the lumber yard at the Dallas Elevator; and eventually purchased and operated the Gregory Lumber Company until he retired. After retiring, he moved back home to the farm he was raised on south of Gregory.
Dick was an avid hunter, fisherman, rodeo fan, and loved his farm and ranch "chores". He loved his family and encouraged them to always give their best, to excel in all of their endeavors, and let the chips fall where they may. Never at a loss for fun, Dick possessed a great talent for humor, joy in life, and had a devout interest in his children and grandchildren and their activities. Dick bestowed upon his family memories that will last a lifetime.
