Leola Josephine (Tagtow) Papousek was born November 11, 1929, on a farm northeast of Iona, SD to Fred and Josie (Smischney) Tagtow. Leola joined brothers Lester and Lawrence and sister Lucille. As a youngster Leola attended the Star School which was a mile and a half from their home. For the first few years Leola rode a pony to get to school. Later when her little sister Lorraine started school their father purchased a car in which they could ride to school.

Leola attended high school in Gregory. She roomed and boarded with the Meyer family. During her high school years she worked several different places to earn her way. Leola graduated in 1948. After graduation Leola taught for two years in rural schools which included Iona and a school northeast of Gregory.

Leola married Woodrow Papousek on December 26, 1949 in Chamberlain, SD. They lived in Gregory a short time before moving to the Dixon area where they farmed and ranched for thirty some years.

Leola commented "usually when a couple started out, a wife's job was to raise chickens and milk cows in order to have grocery money. Gradually I helped with stock cows and pigs, and later managed to help with combining, grain hauling, and the never ending job of hauling water from town for the household."

In 1980 Woody and Leola purchased a house with an acreage near Gregory. Later they purchased the Ranch House Drive In which was quite a challenge for them. Leola said that she enjoyed working with the help, most of which were high school students. She would see them grow up and graduate from high school. They later sold the drive in but continued to farm and ranch.

Woody passed away in 1994. Leola kept busy helping her son Richard at Naper's Emporium until it closed.

Leola was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ruth Circle, and served as treasurer of the memorial committee. She was also secretary-treasurer for the Czech National Cemetery and Community Sunshine Club. Leola spent countless hours caring for flowers at the City Park and on Main Street. Leola had a soft spot for any family that lost a child. She never recovered from losing her beloved Marcy.

Leola passed away peacefully on November 3, 2015 at the Lake Andes Country Care Center after a long battle with Alzheimers.

She is survived by daughter Veronica (Jerome) Frasch of Gregory and son Richard of Colome; four grandchildren Machelle (Jeff) Knittel, Benjamin Grim, Nick (Jen) Papousek, and Katie Lindwurm (fiancé Dave Kansdr); five great-grandchildren, step brothers Leroy and Sterling Totton, several nieces and nephews, special friends Fran Pochop and Norma Springer.

Preceding Leola in death were her parents Fred and Josie, daughter Marcy, husband Woodrow, brothers Lester and Lawrence, and sisters Lucille Feyereisen and Lorraine Hermsen , and stepmother Sarah.

Leola was the last living member of the Fred Tagtow family.
