Charles James "Jim" Richey of Wewela, SD, passed away peacefully at Avera Gregory Hospital on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 after a brief battle with melanoma.

Jim was born in Gregory, SD on July 4, 1950 to Charles D. and Marie (Wood) Richey. In high school, Jim did well in football, basketball and track. His baseball years stretched from childhood at Wewela through town team games for Clearfield. He enjoyed watching his children participate in sports and it was very special when he got to see his grandchildren in baseball, soccer and dance.

After graduating from Keya Paha County High School in 1968, he attended South Dakota State University, and returned to the ranch at Wewela to assist his father with his registered Herefords. On March 23, 1974, he married Nancy Kurzenberger. Jim served on the Colome School Board, and was a member of the Rames Township Board and Wewela Community Hall Board.

Jim fulfilled his life-long goal when he assumed management of his family's farm in 2000 after his father died. He was the fourth generation on land homesteaded in 1909 by his great-grandparents and grandfather. He introduced black cattle to the operation but still maintained a soft spot for his red cows. He was a friend to many, and because of his relationships with some very good people, and through his own efforts, the Turtle Butte Ranch was doubled in size. He loved to drive around and look at his livestock, crops, and pastures.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of 43 years; three children: Steven (Tammy) Richey, Bradley (Nancy) Richey, and Jamie (Kyle) Weller, all of Rapid City, SD; brother William "Bill" (Bonnie) Richey of Ainsworth, NE; sister Charlene (Melvin) Juran of Burke, SD; grandchildren Dylan, Jared, Addisyn, Preston, and Thomas; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and aunt Lucile Richey of Wewela.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, and several aunts and uncles.
