Iris Naomi (Wilson) Krysl was born near Burke, SD, on December 5, 1924, to Sadie Ethel (Elliott) and Earnest Ellsworth Wilson, the seventh of nine children. Her graduation from Burke High School in 1942 was a proud moment for her, after which she completed course work to become a country school teacher. Iris shared her passion for learning and teaching at several schools in north central Nebraska and southern South Dakota.
In August 1949, she married Robert Joseph Krysl. They moved to the C.H. Hansen farm south of Gregory, SD, in 1951 and to this union were born two children, Crystal Lorene and Kipton Dean. Iris was devoted to her family and their life on the farm until 1973 when they bought a home in Gregory. Besides homemaking, Iris also worked at the Gamble Store and at the Gregory Elementary School during her years in Gregory. While Bob played guitar with the Rhythm Ramblers dance band, Iris enjoyed waitressing at Carlock Ballroom. Trick-or-treaters of all ages always came to the door at Halloween for her delicious popcorn balls.
Iris loved gardening, canning, cooking, crocheting and quilting; plus doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She and Bob were active members of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Iris was a Catholic Daughter and a catechism teacher for many years. They were also known to take many a motorcycle cruise, often including campouts with the Wandering Wheels Motorcycle Club. The coffee pot was always brewing or full, and nobody ever left their house hungry. It was a home full of love and laughter.
Iris went home to Heaven on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the age of 91.
Iris is preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, and beloved husband of 56 years, Robert Krysl.
Survivors include her sister Dorothy Hegge, of Bonesteel SD; her daughter Crystal (Gary) Beard of Santa Fe, TX; her son, Kipton (Terri) Krysl of O'Neill, NE; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
