Hans Laprath, age 84, of Dallas, South Dakota passed away on September 25, 2016 at the Gregory Hospital, Gregory, SD.
Hans Norman John (NJ) Laprath was born on April 18, 1932 on his parent's farm in Tripp County, South Dakota. He was the son of Hans Thomas Laprath and Frieda Christiana Manke. He spent his early childhood in Idaho where his family resided during the Great Depression and World War II period. In 1945, the family returned to the Dallas, SD area where his family established their home, farm and cattle operation. He graduated from Dallas High School as a class valedictorian in 1951.
Hans served on active duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He earned his jump wings as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY; and, he served overseas during the Korean War with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team (ARCT).
Hans, along with his brother Bill, managed the family's cattle farm for many years. Hans and his brothers were known for raising a large garden and sharing the melons and produce over the years with their neighbors; and, he was generous to family and neighbors in countless other ways throughout his life. He enjoyed taking pictures, having a great understanding of cameras and computers. Hans was also a member of the Masons.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Richard and Herman, and sister Mary Laprath Ott.
Hans is survived by his brothers: Fred, Colome, SD; Bill, Dallas, SD; Tom, Lake Andes, SD; and sister, Virginia Gordon, Laurel, MT. Hans is also survived by eight nephews and nieces and ten great-nephews and nieces.

Funeral services for Hans Laprath were held Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory with Pastor Royal Archer officiating.
Kathleen Assman was in charge of registration.
Music was provided by Bette Fogel, pianist. Congregational hymns were "Close to Thee" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket Bearers were Brian Beck, Bob Wetzler, Ken Beck, Brad Bolton, Ben Laprath, and Sam Laprath.
Military Honors were given by the Gregory American Legion.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Gregory, SD.
