Esther Christina (Stellwag) Shattuck was born July 5, 1922, to Hans and Clara (Faatz) Stellwag, the second of ten children. She was born and raised on the Stellwag homestead south of Gregory, SD. Esther attended school at Pleasant Site Grade School until 8th grade at Carlock, SD. After graduation she worked to help out with her siblings.

On April 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Harry Fischer at Carlock and to this union five children were born. Esther worked numerous places, 26 years as a cook for Gregory Legion Club and last for Jono's. Then she retired and volunteered at church and Bingo at the nursing home. Esther enjoyed cooking, playing cards, Red Hat Club, Wednesday coffee with the ladies, dancing, and early years bowling.

Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the highlight of her life.

Esther was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory.

Esther was married to Berl Shattuck on March 20, 1963. They ranched and farmed until 1969 when they moved to Gregory.

Esther received eternal rest on March 2, 2018 at the age of 95 years at the Rosebud Country Care Center.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband Berl, parents Hans and Clara, four sisters Mata Johnson, Martha Martin, Ruth Vavra, and Ida Martin, two brothers Harold Stellwag and Leonard Stellwag, brothers-in-law John Martin, Richard Vavra, Bill Martin, Bill Austin, Phil Frey, and Paul Iden, sister-in-law Margaret Stellwag, son Laverne Fischer, and grandson Russell Van Matre.

Esther is survived by four children Larry (June) Fischer of LaMoure, ND, Judy (Russ) Evans of Gregory, SD, Janice Gruhn of Gregory, SD and friend Wayne Kingsbury of Dallas, SD, and Kathy (Ken) Rajewich of Gregory, SD; ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; three sisters Frieda Iden, Kenesaw, NE, Margaret Austin, Spokane, WA, and Dorothy Montoya, Spokane, WA; brother-in-law Harland Johnson, Gregory, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Esther Shattuck, 95, of Gregory, SD, were held Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory with Reverend Marcus Ring and Reverend Clark Gies officiating. A prayer service was held Friday evening at the church.

Shirley Vosika and Doris Berens were in charge of registration.

Music was provided by Melanie Hannahs, organist. Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace," "Just As I Am," and "Asleep in Jesus Blessed Sleep." Geoff Smith, soloist, sang "On Eagles Wings."

Flower attendants were Lois Kruse, Ann Morehouse, and Joan Bloom.

Casket Bearers were Esther's grandsons, Lawrence Fischer, Paul Wald, Bob Van Matre, Brian Gruhn, Jarrett Kuchar, Alan Spaans, Steve Koenig, Kevin Rajewich, and Karl Fischer.

Honorary Casket Bearers were Esther's granddaughters, Brenda Fischer, Lori Wald, Berta VanMatre, Lisa Gruhn, Anita Ritterbush, Kim Koenig, and Karli Spaans.

Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Gregory, SD.
