Edward Lee Haines was born on August 13, 1945, in Gregory, SD, the third of five children, son of Bennett Harwood Haines and Evelyn Chocholousek Haines. He grew up on a farm north of Gregory. There he attended a one room school in Dixon and graduated from Gregory High School in 1963. When Edward was a junior in high school, he was chosen to go to Boys State. His senior year, Edward was elected Student Body President and Homecoming King. He was a member of the basketball team and the Gorillas made it to State his senior year.

Edward attended and graduated from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD. After graduating from college, Edward and a friend backpacked all over Europe. He was a passionate traveler in his younger years and visited San Francisco and New York. Edward also traveled to Iowa to sell insurance where he met his wife Sara (Sally) Niffeneggger. They were married April 25, 1980 in Las Vegas, NV. They resided in Gregory all through their marriage where Edward began farming and ranching. In addition to his farming and ranching, Edward's interests included being an avid fisherman, traveler to Canada, Mexico, and six other states around the US. He helped start a beekeeping business that at its peak operated over 600 colonies. They sold that business in 1993.

Edward began his Haines Hunting Service and operated that venture for 35 years. His unique manner of guiding his hunters helped him win many, many close friends from across the US.

Edward was diagnosed with lung cancer the winter of 2012 and was a lung cancer survivor and that allowed him to enjoy additional mornings at the coffee shop (Jono's) with close friends and fighting hard for the red and white as a die hard Gorilla fan.

Edward was a casual hero, a loved brother, son, and uncle who always loved to laugh and go on adventures. His health deteriorated and he entered hospice care at Rosebud Country Care Center. Edward passed away on June 10, 2017 at the age of 71.

Edward is survived by his mother Evelyn Haines of Gregory, a daughter Laura Frazer and her family, two brothers Harold (Barb) Haines of Kearny, MO and Bill (Marta) Haines of Gregory, sister Madeline (Dale) Pastian of Gregory, and several nieces and nephews.

Edward was preceded in death by Sally, his father Bennett, sister Darlene, and brother-in-law Lee Tappe.

He was deeply loved by his family and will be greatly missed. His legacy will live on through his family.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred...let me sow love.
Where there is injury...pardon.
Where there is doubt...faith.
Where there is despair...hope.
Where there is darkness...light.
Where there is sadness...joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled...as to console,
To be understood...as to understand,
To be loved...as to love,
for
It is in giving...that we receive,
It is in pardoning...that we are pardoned,
It is in dying...that we are born to eternal life.
