Betty Raschke Pharris passed away on June 8, 2017 in San Diego, California at the age of 87. She was born in Gregory, South Dakota on January 25, 1930 to Elise (Vogt) and John Raschke, and grew up on the family farm north of the Gregory.

She was preceded in death by her (ex)husband , Wesley Pharris, and their son, Daniel Pharris, as well as her parents, Elise (Vogt) and John Raschke, and her brothers Albert, Walter, Roy, and Clarence and her sister-in-law, Blanche( Dooley) Raschke, and nephews Rodney and Rick Raschke.

She leaves behind her daughters, Linda Telfer Pharris, Pamela Oosterhuis, and Aleta Pharris as well as her grandsons Patrick and Brian Telfer. She also leaves behind her wonderful sister-in-laws Violet (Schultz) Raschke and Carol (Ragan) Raschke . In addition, she has many nieces and nephews whom she adored: Virgil Raschke, John Raschke, Marylin Raschke Haas, Darrel Raschke, Ronald Raschke, Darla Raschke Jordan, Glen Cook , Leann Cook Sinclair, Sherry Raschke Foss, Rodney Raschke, Claude Raschke, Judy Liddy Farrington, Mike Liddy, Tanny Liddy, Colleen Liddy Groth, Joan Mason Mahacek, Pat Mason Butt, Janice Mason Honetschlanger , Kristine Pharris Ringstmeyer, Bryan Pharris, Kenton Pharris, Beth Ann Pharris Johnson, and Keith Pharris.

She graduated from Gregory High School in 1947. In 1949, she married Wesley Pharris. After getting married, she joined her husband in Chamberlain where they ran the bakery. In 1957, they moved to San Diego, California. During the next several years, Betty and Wes enjoyed bring their daughters home to Gregory during summers to visit family. She was a homemaker and worked for the San Diego School District. During this time, she joined the Classified Employees Association and served on their board for many years. Then, in the late '70s, she left the school district and she started her own business, Pharris Management. She loved what she did and put off retirement until 2000. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends in San Diego and also visiting her family in Gregory.

She often said that she had the best childhood growing up on the farm. A few of the memories are riding her horse to the one room school she attended. One year, when she was young, there were only two families with children attending her school. When the other family moved, there was one child enrolled – Betty. So, she lived in town with her teacher for part of that year. She thought that was great! She laughed when telling us would ignore her mom and dad's directions not to ride her older brother, Albert's, horse when everyone went to town. As soon as they left, she was up on that horse and enjoying a ride. She also remembered riding her horse through the stream on their farm with fondness. Then there was the time when she helped look for rustlers! When she was very little, she remembers sitting on her Grandmother's lap at the window and watching the dust storms. She carried wonderful memories with her into adulthood. As she grew, she loved school – debates, plays, and the companionship of her friends.

She had a special place in her heart for her parents, her brothers, and especially her nieces and nephews as well as her great nephews and nieces. She loved visiting them, seeing how they had grown and changed over the years, and talking and laughing with them.

Although she lived in San Diego for over 60 years, her heart was rooted here in Gregory and Winner with her family and friends.
